ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Geography was established in July 1973. The journey began with BA in Geography and with the passage of time Department introduced Geography Honours in 1975. Subsequently, M.Sc course has been introduced successfully in 2017. The field knowledge is very important in the real world and it is well said by renowned Professor James Fairgrieve that “Geography comes through the soles of one’s shoes”. The department aims to retain excellence in the field of academics in future.

The Department of Geography’s vision is to give its students with educational experiences of the highest qualities and committed to provide best teaching and scholarly activities within the framework of academic freedom and diversity of innovative ideas. The department is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and to serving our communities, from regional to global.
MISSION
- The mission of the Geography Department is to prepare students to engage in the processes that create more sustainable environments and communities throughout the Globe.
- To lead the Geography Department in the development of academic, educational and geospatial technology, harnessing the integrative nature of geographic science to answer fundamental questions of global importance.
OBJECTIVES
- To bring Geographical awareness among the students and masses to solve day to day environmental problems.
- To contribute in the efforts to make the environment and society clean, greener and healthier place to live in.
- To provide students with awareness about the earth’s natural environment and its relationship to society.
- To provide students with knowledge about the spatial association, spatial organization, spatial distribution, physical features and cultural features of the earth.
To provide students with a good grounding in the modern technical skills of the subject, including Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and Computer Cartography.

FACILITIES
The Department has two laboratories one for PG class and other for UG class which is equipped with latest software of Remote Sensing & GIS. The laboratory has well equipped instruments traditional as well as modern apparatus. The department also has a good departmental library with more than 100 subject books.

TEACHING-LEARNING METHODS IN GEOGRAPHY:
It is important that the process of learning must promote the spirit of inquiry and creativity among both learners and teachers. The teaching of Geography must adopt methods that promote creativity, aesthetics and critical perspectives. The Geography teacher, who is an important medium of transacting the core curriculum, must simplify concepts in a language comprehensible to students and must make efforts for making the process of learning participatory by shifting from mere imparting information to involvement in debate and discussion. This approach of learning will keep both learners and teachers alive to social realities. Geography teacher must clarify concepts through the lived experiences of individuals and communities.
