ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The department of physics, St. Bede’s College was established in 1975 with an ambition to pursue Pre-University Classes (P.U.C.) and undergraduate course in physics. Presently, the department supports an undergraduate program which follows the syllabus designed by the affiliated university Himachal Pradesh University. The students are introduced to a wide spectrum of choices which they can pursue after their graduation in Physics through teaching them the basic courses/subjects/papers which are discipline specific and skill enhancement in nature. The physics department has well equipped traditional labs and a computer lab. The department organises lectures by renowned physicists and educationists from time to time. The faculty members are engaged in conducting workshops and seminars regularly on topics of current relevance. Physics department collaborates with other departments for conducting inter-disciplinary activities. The students are taken for regular lab visits to other universities, CPRI, science city, and observatories so as to aid them in conceptual clarity on the one hand and help them in constructing their own understanding of the ideas of physics on the other. The department conducts career guidance/counselling sessions by holding lectures or panel discussions to guide students towards the right career paths. Besides, usual classes faculty members are involved in mentoring of students and providing them value-based education which can help them overcome mental anxieties and face the challenges of life.
MISSION
To attract young women to the study of physics and inculcate scientific temper so that they can pursue curiosity-based research and provide solutions for various societal issues. The department wants to support research and development (R&D) and sustainable science base of the country by fostering the development of human resources in physics.
VISION
The students of physics department should be enriched with analytical and quantitative skills, so that they can become good problem solvers and researchers and understand the world around them with poise.

TEACHING-LEARNING
Generally teaching physics encompasses two learning paradigms, cognitivism and constructivism. Depending on the nature of the course or a topic within specific curricula, a cognitive process (Active Learning, Collaborative Learning, Learning by Inquiry etc.) is selected based on the needs of the students. Proceeding this step, teaching and learning strategies for reinforcing positive learning outcomes are employed. Some of the strategies used are
- Blended Learning (Lecture Method, Demonstrations)
- Computer Aided Learning (Use of Clickers, Spreadsheets, Virtual Labs, Spoken tutorials)
- Computer Aided Learning (Use of Clickers, Spreadsheets, Virtual Labs, Spoken tutorials)
- Experimentation & Observation (To handle & arrange apparatus, to interpret the data obtained)
- Discussion & Analysis
- Learn by Doing online activities
- Problem Solving (to improve critical thinking)
- Screening of documentaries
- Study Oriented Projects
- Laboratory Oriented Projects
- Inter departmental activities
