ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Innovation in science education runs in the Department of Zoology. The Department has established a club named “Zoo Quest “to satisfy and elevate the need of scientific inquiry among the students. Zoo Quest organizes a number of academic activities such as lectures by esteemed scientists, debates, quizzes and visits to various institutions. Department also publishes its annual newsletter “Zoology Buzz” which incorporates creatively written articles from students and teachers. The department helps to train students to respond to the global challenges and the needs of the Indian society in particular, through education in the areas of General Biology, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology; Animal Developmental Biology, Genetics, Evolutionary biology, Reproductive Biology and General Physiology . Recognizing the essential roles of science and biology in the lives of citizens today and tomorrow, we emphasize biological literacy in our teaching and outreach programs.
Integrated teaching learning process is the heart of the department. Versatility in teaching-learning strategies is always adopted with free hands with the aim of shaping up valued personalities. Active learning strategies such as tutorial classes, group discussions, book reviews, e-assignments, presentations and seminars are emphasized. Learning in the field is accomplished through regular educational excursions specially for the skill enhancement courses in zoology like apiculture, sericulture and aquaculture which gives an insight to students regarding various career options through zoology. Scientific talks with eminent scientists are organized for reinforcement of students.

OBJECTIVES
- To facilitate higher education and research in Zoology.
- To provide quality education in offering skill based programs and motivate the students for self employment in applied branches in Zoology.
- To inculcate entrepreneurial skills among the students.
- To provide students with a working knowledge of fundamental principles in zoology that will provide a foundation for their later advanced course work in more specific biological subjects.
- To provide students familiarity with animal classification schemes and associated taxonomic group diagnostic characteristics as well as to develop an understanding and ability to apply basic zoological principles.
- The laboratory and lecture sections of the course are highly integrated and directed toward teaching students the principles of animal evolution, classification, form and function.
- To equip students with adequate practical knowledge that will enable them be self-reliant and pioneers in the field of apiculture, aquariculture, sericulture and medical diagnostics.

FACILITIES
The campus is equipped with latest state-of-art technology of computer network with high speed backbone and security. The campus has subscribed to licensed software for its computers. The complete campus area is covered under the umbrella of wireless (Wi-Fi) network, on which students get connected to network and internet on their laptop outside the class room and lab as well as in hostels. The auditorium and classrooms are connected with the local high speed LAN and Wi-Fi for facilitating faculty for teaching and accessing databases. The facility is extensively used by prospective employers for placements as well as students and staff.
- Library Facilities: The departmental library has a collection of 180 books. It is kept open 7 hours a day.
- A Stereo Zoom trinocular microscope : This microscope provides sharp, clear stereo images with a wider magnification range and larger stage platform. It is versatile enough for educational, clinical and medical studies.
- Insect cabinets with a collection of various insects from various orders.
- Introduction of MIPS- A trinocular microscope LED with data analysis. The slides viewed under the microscope can be seen on the computer screen with the software Future Winjoe. The pictures of the slides can be captured by this software.
- Glucometer to check glucose level.
- Haemocytometer used to count the red blood cells.
- Sphygmomanometer an instrument for measuring blood pressure.

Hands on experience
It involves the active participation of students to experience scientific concepts than to just have an audience view.

Usage of visual clues
Using visual clues easily supplements auditory information and students can easily connect better with ideas. The multi-sensory experiences improve their understanding and memorization. This includes drawings, diagrams, and pictures to assist theory and setting up examples to show its application side.

Instructional conversations
Building instructional conversations is a key method to teach science vocabulary. Students are allowed to talk in between the lectures about the experience they had with an application related to the topic of discussion.

Word parts
Students are asked to identify and understand prefix, suffix, and base word, and to relate their meanings. For example, metamorphosis — meta (large), morph (change), osis (process); photosynthesis — photo (light), synth (make), isis (process).

Virtual science labs
There are many virtual science labs available online for free and therefore, this approach almost gives hands on experience of learning the subject without much expense. Detailed diagrams, illustrations or close up pictures allow students to virtually get inside a plant or animal part without actually doing it. Dissections in biology can be studied thoughtfully with a virtual hands-on sensation without the problem of odour.

Argue with science
Learning through argumentation gives students a widened thinking to contrasting ideas which in turn deepen their understanding. They can refine ideas with others and engage with open-ended questions, and re-state observations or remarks in a more scientific language.

Projects
This can be an individual activity or group activity which helps students to showcase the application side of what they learnt through theory. This method involves choosing the idea, building a plan, executing the plan and finally evaluating it. When students pass through these stages, they can improve their skills to express ideas, problem solving, overcoming the challenges, team work and self-assessment.

Video clips
This teaching technique makes use of instructional video clips available online or in libraries to show and teach a new concept. The evolution of a process can be conveyed better with animation videos.

Power points
Instead of the conventional talk and chalk methods, inclusion of power point presentations in the classroom makes it more interesting. Computers are connected to projectors to address a larger classroom and include interesting slides with diagrams and flow charts to make the teaching more interactive.

Research books
The teacher promotes the use of research books in classrooms rather than just text books and lecture notes. Students are asked to do a research on whatever topic is covered in class by means of libraries, websites and sometimes certain experiments are also set for the clarity of any topic. This includes the extended information of their syllabus and their findings with diagrams and charts to emphasize it.

Peer-to-peer teaching
Students take the role of teaching each other that promotes excitement learning science. In Peer-to-Peer Teaching approach, they are really engaged in the content by discussing scientific topics, generating questions and working in teams to explore new information.

In the middle of boring classroom sessions, students are taken out for field trips to experience science while learning.

Science clubs
A science clubs has been set up in the Zoology department named ZOO QUEST which is an ideal approach to education that assimilates high quality hands-on instruction. This is the right place for science enthusiasts to share and discuss new happenings in the science world and to connect innovative ideas to what they have actually learned.

Interactive science journals
This is an advanced version of lecture notes in which students express the information they learnt into different templates and elicit their own responses. Students use this technique effectively to have a deeper connection to their learning and this activity promotes their higher level thinking. They can be creative with their notebooks using pictures, charts and comments, thus, building an encompassing resource for future reference.

Science quiz
It is done as a whole class activity by splitting the group into 4 or more sets. The questions can include the application of the theory taught in class. Students discuss and share ideas to find the solution within the stipulated time frame. This teaching approach helps students to think from different angles and sometimes, to think out of the box.

Constructing a model
This is a challenging task given to students as part of science education. Models are the building blocks of science which are used to explain the diverse aspects of real world. Students will be creative in making models and designing their own imaginative means of testing them which is the right approach to find the scientist in them.
